Timeline

From seclusion to a pavilion, then a full repair

  1. After the fall of Goryeo

    Gil Jae withdraws

Gil Jae (길재 · 吉再) stayed out of office and withdrew to his home town.

  2. 176844th year of King Yeongjo (영조 · 英祖) of Joseon

    Chaemijeong is built

It was built to honour the loyalty and learning of Gil Jae, known by his pen name Yaeun (야은 · 冶隱).

  3. 1977

    Full repair

After a full repair, the pavilion has been well preserved to this day.

The name

Gil Jae turned down office, saying he could not serve two kings.

The name likens Gil Jae’s seclusion to the old Chinese story of Boyi and Shuqi (伯夷 · 叔齊, 백이 · 숙제) gathering bracken.
